Seattle SCORES Poetry Slam, November 2007 : Once again, the super-talented kids of Seattle SCORES took to the stage to share spoken words from their very being.
These photos are from the SLAM at Tukwila High School on November 7.   The kids were joined by the fabulous spoken word artist Laura Piece Kelly.
The last several photos are from a practice session during which the kids were joined by the amazing Blue Scholars!

United Indians of All Tribes Dinner: Pathways to Prosperity : United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in partnership with the Northwest Area Foundation presented a dinner to celebrate and share the new "Pathways to Prosperity" initiative, an innovative multi-tiered initiative designed to alleviate poverty in the Greater Seattle Native American community.

United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF) was founded to serve as a focal point for the renewal and regeneration of Indigenous people in the Greater Seattle area and beyond.   For more about United indians see:  http://www.unitedindians.com/

The Northwest Area Foundation exists to help communities in an eight-state region reduce poverty. Celebrating Judge Richard Jones at University of Washington Law School, November 2007 : The UW School of Law, Interim Dean Greg Hicks and many friends gathered together to celebrate the confirmation of UWLS graduate Judge Richard A. Jones ’75 as a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.  The event took place on November 19, 2007  at the UW School of Law, William H. Gates Hall.  A welcome and remarks were provided by The Hon. Charles Z. Smith ’55.

13th Annual University of Washington MAP Bridging the Gap Breakfast : On October 27, 2007 the Multicultural Alumni Partnership (MAP) of the University of Washington presented its 13th annual Bridging the Gap Breakfast on Homecoming Day.  

During this celebration of diversity, awards were given to Phil Lane Jr, CEO of United Indians and to Carolyn Chow of the UW School of Nursing.  Distinguished Alumni Awards were given to Harold G. Booker, J.D., Ruthann Kurose and Rogelio Riojas. 

Six outstanding UW students received scholarship awards in recognition of their hard work and contribution to the university.  

Corporate sponsors included Safeco Insurance, Macy*s, The Nielsen Company, Pfizer, the UW Alumni Association, the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity and the UW Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Seattle Association of Black Journalists: Student Career Workshop : On October 20, 2007 at Seattle's African American Academy, this workshop was sponsored by the Seattle Association of Black Journalists (SABJ).  Featuring local Black journalists representing print, broadcast and new medias and attended by many high school and college students, the workshop was an opportunity for all to explore and learn more about careers in journalism. South Asian Bar Association of Washington Banquet : The Second Annual South Asian Bar Association of Washington Banquet on October 12, 2007.  This Mela (celebration) was a strong gathering of South Asian lawyers and friends.  The event featured an awards presentaton and keynote speaker, Pramila Jayapal, executive director of the Hate Free Zone.  Ms. Jayapal provided a compelling and inspiring talk regarding our obligations to uphold human rights for all in this country and all over the world.

SABAW is an organization of South Asian legal professionals in the Northwest dedicated to providing access to legal resources and support for issues relevant to the South Asian community. SABA is also committed to identifying and advancing the areas where economic, social and political interests intersect with South Asian legal issues. Finally, SABA serves as a liaison between South Asian legal professionals and the legal community at large.

Judge John C. Coughenour Endowed Award in Trial Advocacy : On Thursday, May 24, 2007 the University of Washington Law School and the Trial Advocacy Program celebrated the establishment of the Judge John C. Coughenour Endowed Award in Trial Advocacy. 

The Coughenour Award was presented to the Best Oral Advocate following a mock trial competition, presided over by Judge Coughenour, held in the Magnuson Jackson Trial Courtroom.  The four finalists were Trial Advocacy 2 students Rachel Cormier Anderson, Ben Carr, Karama Hawkins, and Adrian Madrone.  After the mock trial competition, the law school hosted a reception to officially present the award to the Best Oral Advocate and to celebrate the award established in honor of Judge Coughenour by friends, colleagues, former clerks and family as he transitions into senior status.

Professor Bill Rodgers: Celebrating 40 Years of Teaching, Scholarship & Environmental Advocacy : William H. Rodgers, Jr. is the Stimson Bullitt Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Washington School of Law.  On April 20-21, 2007 local and national environmental community leaders and friends gathered to celebrate Professor Rodgers' first 40 years of groundbreaking environmental advocacy, teaching and productive scholarship.  These photos are from a reception held at William H. Gates Hall on April 20, 2007.  Speakers included Billy Frank Jr. of the Nisqually Indian Tribe, Chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission (NWIFC) for 22 years and Professor Rodgers' daughter, also an environmental advocate and professor, Andrea Rodgers. Social Justice Fund Volunteer Celebration 2007 : On February 23, 2007, this was an event to celebrate members, friends and volunteers of the Social Justice Fund.  With performances by local spoken word artists and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, the evening was filled with information and entertainment. Founded in 1977, Social Justice Fund NW (formerly A Territory Resource) is an organization dedicated to addressing the root causes of social, economic, and environmental inequities. Each year, Social Justice Fund NW raises funds from its members and friends, and then grants that money to non-profit social justice organizations in the Northwest and Northern Rockies. The event featured live music from some of the best local musicians of color (and some who flew in from far away....)  With performers ranging in genre from soul to hip hop, classical, Latin, blues and more, the music was diverse and exciting. The event also included the presentation of the Maya Loren Award to Magdaleno Rose-Avila, outgoing executive director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

Daniel Lev Memorial Dinner, February 27, 2007 : An event sponsored by the University of Washington School of Law Asian Law Center, this dinner celebrated the life and work of Daniel Lev.  Daniel Lev taught political science at the University of Washington for 29 years before his demise in July of 2006.  Known to Indonesians as "Bapak Dan" or "Father Dan", Professor Lev wrote several seminal books and articles on Indonesian courts and politics.  Professor Lev worked alongside lawyers, scholars and dissidents to improve a dysfunctional legal system in which police brutality and corrupt judges ran rampant during the long-running Suharto regime.
